GROUP SWIM LESSONS SKIPPER LEVEL - PARENT & CHILD (6 months - 3 years old)
No previous water experience needed. Children and parents are introduced to basic water skills together in a fun, safe, learning environment. Songs, games and toys will be used. (No Maximum Number of Participants)This is the first class for children without a parent in the water. They will be introduced to basic water skills: kicking, blowing bubbles, floating, submerging their face, and proper arm strokes. This is the second level for preschool children. Participants should be able to swim the paddle stroke the width of the pool independently. The emphasis of the class will be back stroke and proper rhythmic breathing. This is the highest level of the preschool classes. In order to participate in this class, children should be able to paddle stroke with rhythmic breathing and successfully backstroke. This class focuses on rotary breathing, crawl stroke and underwater swimming. PROGRESSIVE LEVEL - POLLIWOG (6 - 12 years old)
This level is for beginner swimmers. No previous water experience is needed. This class is perfect for those who might be nervous in and around the water. Focus of the class is on water safety and basic swimming skills. - GUPPY/MINNOW (6 - 12 years old)
This class is for those who are able to swim the width of the pool on their front, back and side independently. Emphasis is on front, back and sidestroke. Stroke development is necessary with successful rhythmic breathing. Student should be comfortable in deep water. Student should be able to swim 50 yds of front crawl, back crawl, and side stroke in good to very good form. Breaststroke should be more refined and Butterfly is introduced. Endurance and stroke refinement are the emphasis of this class. Tuesday 6:30 - 7:15 pm - FLYING FISH (6 - 12 years old)
This is the highest level offered by the Y. To make it in this class 50 yds off each stroke need to be completed successfully and without a great deal of rest. The focus of this class is to become proficient in each and every level and to learn competitive starts and flip turns. LIFEGUARD TRAINING PROGRAM Are you 15 years of age or older and looking for a great year round job or a challenging career? Lifeguarding lets you work as part of a team to help people safely enjoy the water. You could even save a life. Lifeguarding will help you develop skills and experience that will be valued by colleges and future employers. You’ll earn the respect of your peers because you’ll be making a difference to others and yourself. Colleges and employers look for applicants who candeal effectively with people, who have a take charge attitude and who are willing to work to develop new skills. Through videos, group discussion and hands-on practice, you’ll learn patron rescue and surveillance skills, first aid and CPR/AED. Prerequisites: Must be at least 15 years old and pass certain swimming requirements. Attendance at each class is mandatory. Successful candidates will receive a 2 year CPR/AED certification and 3 year lifeguarding certification. PRIVATE SWIMMING LESSONS One-on-one attention is paid to the participant. Each lesson is 45 minutes long and is scheduled with the Aquatics Director who works with the pool schedule and the participants schedule to best suit for 8 meetings. POOL PARTY RENTAL!!! Contact the Aquatics Director to schedule your birthday party today! WATER CLASSES This popular class will improve your energy and fitness level with no impact on your joints. This is a fun environment where no swimming skills are required. This class contains a series of gentle exercises in water. Participants gain increased motion in stiff, sore joints will finding relief from pain. This class is held in the shallow end of the pool. This time slot is designed for those who want to have the freedom to spend quality time with their children in the water. It is a quiet fun time for mothers and their children to cool off in the middle of the day or to tire the little ones out before nap time. This shallow-end class emphasizes the combination of stretching, toning and cardio to improve coordination and energy level. Come to this fun filled class to get a great workout. This exercise program is gentle on your joints while helping you get in shape. Water walking works your entire body and is a great alternative to the treadmill for your weekly cardio. Floatation belts are provided and no swimming skills are needed. Dive-In Movie Watch your movies then come down to the New Britain-Berlin YMCA. Bring your lounging floats and your inner tubes. Only family friendly movies will be offered. We will advertise our Dive-In Movie of the month the 1st of each month and we will shut the pool down on the last Friday of each month from 7:15 - 9:15 pm for your viewing pleasure. |
